AP bypolls: TRS wins 4 seats, Cong draws a blank

Hyderabad: The ruling Congress on Wednesday drew a blank in Andhra Pradesh bypolls as TRS candidates won four seats, while TRS backed independent, YSR Congress and the BJP won one seats each in the bypoll to seven assembly constituencies in the state.
The by-elections to seven assembly seats - Station Ghanpur, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Kollapur, Nagarkurnool, Kovur and Mehabubnagar - six of them in Telangana region, were held on Sunday.
The elections were caused by vacancies that arose due to the resignations of two legislators of the Congress and four rebels of the TDP.

In Mahabubnagar, the election was held due to the death of one independent legislator, who was an associate member of Congress.

IPL founder Lalit Modi declared bankrupt

London: Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has been declared bankrupt in a London court over unpaid bills of 65,000 pounds (Rs 53 lakh approx) owed to a private security firm.
According to a report in The Telegraph daily, the order was passed last month and comes at a time when Modi is awaiting the judgment from a libel trial with the retired New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns.
Modi owes the Page Group, an international securities and risk assessment company, fees for services provided in 2010.
Modi in his defence, said "Until the order was served, I was completely unaware of any outstanding monies. I have not seen any previous demands but since it came to my attention, I've even offered to lodge the sum being claimed with the court pending clarity. But for some reason, that was refused, by the company concerned."
The former BCCI vice-president and cricket entrepreneur, who now lives in London, feels that it is an attempt to gain cheap publicity by the securities firm.
Stuart Page, the company's chairman, said: "It's unfortunate that we have come to this situation but Modi has given us no other option. We gave Modi a number of security services in relation to threats made against him and his family. We submitted a number of invoices which were not paid."
Page further stated: "(Our) attempts to reach a settlement with Modi were to no avail and we were forced to take the action we have taken."
A hearing will be held in London shortly when Modi will attempt to have the order set aside.
"It is a ridiculous waste of everyone's time and I can only assume it is being done in an attempt to gain some sort of publicity at my expense. Any suggestion that this order means I am unable to pay is equally ridiculous," Modi said.

Tech Mahindra, Mahindra Satyam merge

New Delhi: The swap ratio for the merger of Mahindra Satyam with Tech Mahindra has been fixed at 8.5 shares of Satyam for every one share of Tech Mahindra, by the boards of the two companies.
The ratio is on expected lines, though some players felt Tech Mahindra shareholders should have got a slightly better deal because of the liabilities in Mahindra Satyam. The merger will create the fifth largest player in the listed I-T services space, with combined revenues of a little over Rs 10,000 crore.
"Given that TechM would become a more diversified entity, with reduced client and vertical concentration street multiples for TechM could see an improvement, contingent on the revenue and margin pain on account of BT subsiding. We believe TechM stock will see a one-time adjustment tomorrow based on the swap ratio and trade going forward on the quantum of synergy benefits articulated by the management," brokerage house Nomura said in a note on Tuesday.

Satyam shares were flat at Rs 74.30, and Tech Mahindra shares were up 2 per cent at 662.

In fact the Centre said criminalising consensual gay sex in private was a violation of the fundamental rights of citizens.

"We learnt and got subsequently enlightened after the HC verdict," the Attorney General added.
There was confusion last month when the Home Ministry took a contrarian view in the court, only to make a U-turn soon after. The Centre's clarification in that context even led the Supreme Court to question the Centre's "subsequent enlightenment".

Gujarat: 2 BJP MLAs accused of watching porn

New Delhi: After Karnataka the porngate has hit Gujarat. Two BJP MLAs allegedly watched porn inside the Gujarat Assembly. They were watching porn on a tablet computer while the assembly proceeding was on.
Gujarat Speaker Ganpat Vasava has ordered probe into allegations against two BJP MLAs of watching obscene pictures during Assembly proceedings.
Sources said that the two MLAs facing the allegations are Shankarbhai Lagadhirbhai Chaudhary and Jethabhai Ghelabhai Ahir Bharwad from the BJP. While Chaudhary is an MLA from Radhanpur, Bharwad is from Shehra.
A reporter from a local Gujarati newspaper is believed to have captured the duo watching porn on his cell phone.
Chaudhary, however, denied allegations, saying that this was an attempt to malign her image. "The allegations of me watching porn in assembly is baseless. This is an attempt to politically malign me. The assembly proceedings are recorded in CCTV. I request the Opposition to check the CCTV footage. All the allegations against me are baseless. I am not the person who watches porn at all."
Bharwad said, "This is baseless and wrong. I will resign if found guilty. Mediapersons are showing the correct thing. You should be truthful. We have not done anything wrong. We are very hurt. Opposition party is targeting us. We are ready to face an enquiry. We will resign if found guilty."
Reacting to the allegations against BJP MLAs, Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari slammed BJP for violating temples of democracy. "Sad that BJP ruled states are violating temples of democracy. This is their real 'charitra' (character)," he said.
Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly Arjun Modhwadia said that BJP's real face has now come out in open and demanded that a House Committee should investigate the matter.
"BJP's real face came out in the open when legislators were caught watching porn clips in Karnataka assembly. Legislators in Gujarat also were caught watching obscene photographs. A house committee should investigate this case," Congress leader Modhwadia said.
BJP leader Balbir Punj said, "If this news is indeed true, we will take action on the guilty MLAs just the same way as we did in the case of Karnataka."
Janakbhai Purohit, journalist of a local daily who recorded the BJP MLAs watching porn, said that he even informed the Speaker about it but after a while the duo continued to watch porn. "First they took out a photograph of Swami Vivekananda, but then they started looking at vulgar photographs of girls. I realised that this was wrong and I informed the speaker about it," Purohit said.
The controversy comes a few days after three BJP MLAs in Karnataka were forced to resign from the state cabinet after being caught watching porn in the assembly.

Agent Vinod: Kareena Kapoor's last action film

Mumbai: While her contemporaries like Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif are gung-ho about action flicks, Kareena Kapoor would rather stick to romance and drama on the big creen.
Never mind if she's already had a few thrills in her upcoming film with beau Saif Ali Khan. If her own admission is any indication, she might not do an action flick again.
Romance rules
"The kind of action I've done in the film is more intriguing and thrilling than jumping out of buildings. I wouldn't do that because I don't enjoy it," she says, adding that beau Saif knows she doesn't like action.

"So he had asked that there should be minimal action for me. If I were offered another action film, I don't know if I'd do it. I like my romantic films like Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and also Titanic, which I'm looking forward to seeing in the 3D format," she states.
All in the family
The film is also special for Bebo as it's her first for Saif's production house. "It's his dream film, because he's been wanting to make a spy thriller... like a James Bond, Bourne trilogy and even Tintin. And it's important to me because he wanted me to be a part of it," she grins.
Money matters
Speaking about the reports of the budget and production going haywire after the film's first schedule in Morocco, the actress says that it didn't perturb them a bit. She doesn't shy away from admitting, "We're pretty much used to it. Any publicity is good publicity."

Asia Cup: Bangladesh enter final, India knocked out

Mirpur: In a historic achievement, Bangladesh entered their maiden Asia Cup final by beating Sri Lanka by five wickets at the Shere Bangla stadium on Tuesday.
The result knocks India out of the tournament, who finished level on points with the host nation, but lost out because of their defeat against Bangladesh earlier in the competition.
AP Photo
Chasing a target of 212 for victory in 40 overs in a rain-affected game, Bangladesh won in the 38th over, thanks to half-centuries by Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan.
The home team did not get off to the best of starts, losing opener Nazimuddin who chopped a Nuwan Kulasekara delivery one on to his stumps, in the second over of the innings.
After a brief partnership between Tamim and Jahurul Islam, Bangladesh were dealt another blow when the latter mistimed a pull shot off Suranga Lakmal to find Chamara Kapugedera at mid-on, who completed the easiest of catches.
Bangladesh soon lost their third wicket when skipper Mushfiqur Rahim played all over a swinging delivery from Kulasekara to be comprehensively bowled, to leave Bangladesh stuttering at 40 for 3.
Tamim was now joined by Shakib and the two went about their business in imperious fashion as the Sri Lankan bowlers failed to come up with the answers.
Tamim who was magnificent, striking boundaries on either side of the wicket, put on 76 runs for the fourth wicket with Shakib.
He brought up his 23rd fifty in one-dayers and just when it seemed like the hosts were in control of proceedings, the Bangladeshi opener fell to offspinner Sachithra Senanayake, as he failed to keep an attempted cut shot on the ground, and Lahiru Thirimanne at backward point took a fine diving catch.
Tamim faced 57 balls for his 59 and struck nine glorious boundaries on the way.
Meanwhile Shakib brought up his half-century by stepping out to Senanayake and hitting the bowler for a couple of delightful fours.
However, it was Senanayake who had the last laugh when by trapping the former Bangladesh captain lbw for 56.
It was then left to middle-order batsman Nasir Hossain, who has been a revelation for the Tigers in the tournament, and allrounder Mahmudullah to guide the team home rather comfortably in the end, as the Lankan bowlers lost their line and length.
Nasir finished unbeaten on 36 while Mahmudullah remained not out on 32 and put on 77 runs for the sixth wicket, to take Bangladesh to one of their most significant wins.
Earlier, three quick wickets from Nazmul Hossain, who came in the team for the injured Shafiul Islam helped Bangladesh to restrict Sri Lanka to 231 in their 50 overs, before rain turned the home side's chase into a 40-over affair.
Nazmul, who played his last ODI back in October last year, rocked the Lankan top-order by removing Mahela Jayawardene (5), Tillakaratne Dilshan (19) and Kumar Sangakkara (6) early on.
Thirimanne and Kapugedera then held fort for Sri Lanka and without taking too much risk rotated the strike well in the middle overs. The pair added 88 for the fourth wicket, after which Kapugedera, along with Upul Tharanga (48), orchestrated a further 49 for the fifth wicket.
Thirimanne missed out on a half century by two runs when Abdur Razzaq picked up the in-form batsman who tried to charge out to a delivery that was going down the legside. The ball richocheted off Rahim's pads and hit the stumps with the batsman out of his crease.
Meanwhile, Kapugedera completed his half-century but soon he fell to Razzaq as well. Trying to hit a cover drive, Kapugedera could only mange to find Shakib Al Hasan who held onto a low catch. Kapugedera made 62 that included four boundaries.
Allrounders Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Kulasekara failed to make a positive impact with the bat as Shakib struck at regular intervals during the batting Powerplay. Sri Lanka were again in dire straits with scorecard reading 183 for 7.
But Tharanga carried on with his usual business of hitting the ball all over the park and in the process brought up Sri Lanka's 200. Tharanga also missed out on a half century by two runs when he edged one off Shahadat Hossain, trying to steer it down to third-man, to wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
The tail-end duo Sachithra Senanayake and Lasith Malinga scored handy 19 and 10 respectively, but Sri Lanka only managed 232 in 49.5 overs.

2012 Premier Rio first drive

Compact SUVs were one of the highlights of the 2012 Auto Expo. While Ford unveiled its compact global SUV, the EcoSport, Maruti showcased its XA Alpha concept, and then there were the compact MPVs. This is a new niche in which manufacturers are now sensing serious potential, but guess which manufacturer was the first to tap into it? Premier Auto!
Maker of the venerable Padmini but now almost out of business, the Rio was Premier’s attempt at making a comeback into the Indian market, but the chink in its armour was its BS III compliant diesel engine due to which it could not be sold in bigger cities. The Auto Expo had Premier launch the Rio Plus, which boasts of a BS IV compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine to solve the problem.
Apart from the engine change the Rio has also been given a styling update, giving it a more contemporary look. Major changes have been made to the front, and the headlamps are now modern looking curvy units, along with a new bumper with integrated fog lamps and a larger, purposeful grille. Add to this body-coloured bumpers, and side-claddings, mirror-mounted indicators, chunky 15-inch tyres and a rear wheel cover and the Rio looks a lot more youthful.
2012 Premier Rio first drive
Ground clearance is up by 5mm, and now stands at 200mm. Step inside and you notice the refreshed interiors, but the truth be told it is extremely dated and built very cheaply with poor quality. This might have been acceptable in the 80’s, not any more. However, the beige upholstery has given a sense of roominess to the cabin.
Ergonomics remain unchanged though, and the Rio is pretty cramped due to its narrow track and wheelbase. The driver's elbow tends to hit the door pads on the right while the front passenger too needs to deal with the same problem. The driver and passenger will constantly be hitting elbows and it is no better at the back where leg, knee, head and shoulder room are all at a premium. Hatchbacks today are considerably more spacious and comfortable.
Sitting under the hood is a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine developed by AVL, Austria, but manufactured in China and assembled at Premier's Pune plant. Engine refinement could be better. The power and torque figures stand at 76.6PS at 5800rpm and 103.9Nm produced between 3500 and 4250rpm. The engine lacks punch though, and the Rio feels slow.
It isn't torquey either, so I had to downshift quite often when negotiating uphill sections. The gearbox is not impressive either, and shift quality and feel leave something to be desired.
The Rio accelerated to 100kmph in 18.9 seconds making it three seconds quicker than the Rio diesel. The oil burner is much torquier and doesn't feel as sluggish.
Top speed recorded was 143.2kmph but the Rio is slow accelerating through gears. But stability under braking is impressive with ABS and the Rio comes to a full stop from 100kmph in 3.42 seconds, covering 48.66 metres. Ride quality is decent, but rear end tends to get bumpy over bad roads and undulations.
The Rio turns out to be a good alternative to a hatchback for city driving with its taller seating and compact dimensions despite being an SUV. But in comparison, lack of features and performance are its stumbling blocks.
The Rio tries to make up with its pricing though, and the Rio Plus petrol retails at Rs5.96 lakh, ex-showroom Pune for the base GX version (grey interiors) and Rs6.23 lakh for GLX version with alloy wheels, stereo and beige interiors.
Premier is also expected to launch the Rio Plus with the 1.3-litre Fiat-sourced Multijet engine soon, this move should help sell more Rios especially in bigger cities.

Agent Vinod: Pakistan bans film for ISI reference

New Delhi: Pakistan has banned 'Agent Vinod', actor Saif Ali Khan's latest film with actress and girlfriend Kareena Kapoor. The film allegedly made references to the Pakistani spy agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
'Agent Vinod', written and directed by Sriram Raghavan, features Saif along with Kareena Kapoor in lead roles and is being released on March 23. Saif plays the role of an Indian RAW Agent. The film opens in the eastern Europe. Agent Vinod's partner in the film has joined hands with LeT or Russian mafia and he passes them all information but he is caught and killed, but he leaves a clue behind before he dies.
However, like a typical Bond movie, the mission for the desi spy seems to prevent nuclear war from happening. Agent Vinod is on a mission. Then a rollercoaster ride begins where he goes to Moscow and then to Pakistan to India to London to Capetown. And he saves nuclear war that was to happen in Delhi.

Windows 8 coming this October: Bloomberg

New Delhi: The next big Windows operating system from Microsoft is expected to be launched this October, according to Bloomberg. Citing sources, Bloomberg says the initial rollout will include devices running Intel and ARM chips.
Microsoft's next big ticket release happens in October, so that the company and PC manufacturers can make the best of the Christmas shopping season in the west.
The technology giant had first demonstrated its new operating system in June last year at the D: All Things Digital conference. The operating system is "touch first," which means it responds to finger swipes like other tablets, but will also respond to keyboards and mouses if they are attached. The home screen consists of various blocks of applications and looks like the Windows Phone interface.
