Friday Release: Spy thriller 'Agent Vinod'

Mumbai: On the eve of release of the spy thriller 'Agent Vinod', director Sriram Raghavan says that the audience will be 'surprised' to see the other side of real life couple Saif Ail Khan and Kareena Kapoor on the screen.
Since the time they started dating, Saif and Kareena have acted together in two films, namely 'Tashan' and 'Kurbaan', however, both the movies failed to click with the audience.
"For us that was (pairing Saif and Kareena) something we were conscious of....But it did not scare me...I took it as a challenge. Here he (Saif) is playing a spy, don't know much about him, his past, what he would do next, while Kareena plays a mysterious girl who Saif encounters in Morocco. I am not making a love story with them, I am making a plot driven film," Raghavan told PTI in an interview.

The Saif and Kareena-starrer spy thriller is scheduled to hit the screens tomorrow.
"Probably, viewers would expect something...I hope we kind of a defy that and so they would be like surprised seeing a different kind of a relationship that they have seen (between the two). Even the audience would forget that they are a real life couple. They would be seen in a different way..," he said.
The director said it was Saif's idea to cast Kareena opposite him in 'Agent Vinod'.
"Saif and I thought of coming together with a spy movie as we both liked the old 'Agent Vinod'. The fact that Saif has his own production house and Kareena as his friend and also that she was not cast in 'Love Aaj Kal' so Saif asked is there a role for her, so I told him let me finish the script first," Raghavan said.
"I did not want to give Kareena a role just like that, I wanted to give her a good role as she is a fantastic actress. So if they are real life couple or not I don't care as long as I get two good actors in my film. My only worry was that she might say is the role good enough for me, but she was happy with the role," Raghavan said.
His earlier two movies, 'Ek Hasina Thi' and 'Johnny Gadar'--both thrillers--did not have much of song and dance, unlike 'Agent Vinod' which has an item number, a Mujra and a few other songs.
"The earlier movies were small and I had then thought that I don't need to incept song and dance, but 'Agent Vinod' is a big adventurous film. I am still to get over my inhibition of getting my hero suddenly burst into a song and
dance....Iam not good at that, though I love watching it," the director said.
Justifying the need for song, Raghavan said, "Agent Vinod needs flamboyant music. The song takes the story forward and does not just interfere in between...with each song something else is happening".
On Kareena's maiden mujra, the director said initially they were undecided whether the actress would feature in it.
"Initially we were not sure. She plays a character in the film and we did not want her to suddenly burst into a Mujra, like a typical Hindi film. We did not want that...but we got that link," he added.

Soumitra: Right now my mind is on flashback mode

Kolkata: Iconic Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee said his being named for the Dada Saheb Phalke award – the highest honour in Indian cinema – is a recognition of his hard work in the last 53 years and expressed gratitude to directors like Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha and others for honing his acting skills.
Chatterjee, 77, said it was an "emotional moment" for him and he would receive the award on behalf of the doyens of the Bengali movie industry whose guidance helped him evolve as an actor. "I am very happy. It is an emotional moment for me. I thank everybody. It is a recognition of the hard work I have put in for the last 53 years. The people of my country have recognised my toil," said Chatterjee.
The Padma Bhushan awardee expressed his gratitude to directors like Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha and veteran actors like Chabi Biswas and Tulsi Chakraborty for honing his acting skills.
Soumitra Chatterjee: Right now my mind is on flashback mode
"I would like to thank many old people of this industry like (legendary movie directors) Satyajit Ray and Tapanda," he said. "Right now my mind is on a flashback mode. I would thank actors like Chabi Biswas and Tulsi Chakraborty. It would have been great if I could have handed the award to them. It is on their behalf that I will receive the honour," he said.
Chatterjee regretted that the sublime work of actors like Biswas and Chakraborty went unrewarded. One of India's most talented actors, Chatterjee made his debut in 1959 with Ray’s super-hit movie 'Apur Sansar'. The film gave him the much needed platform, and he never had to look back.
Chatterjee soon became Ray's favourite, and played the lead roles in most of the movie maker’s classics including 'Sonar Kella', 'Charulata', and 'Ghare Baire'. Chatterjee's association with Ray is often compared with the chemistry between famous actor-director duos of the world such as Akira Kurosowa-Toshiro Mifune and Marcello Mastroianni-Federico Fellini.
Apart from Ray, Chatterjee has worked with all internationally acclaimed directors of his time, including Mrinal Sen, Tapan Sinha and Tarun Majumdar.
Some of his notable movies are 'Jhinder Bandi', 'Koni', 'Kaapurush', 'Akash Kusum', 'Aranyer Din Ratri', 'Joy Baba Felunath', 'Teen Bhubaner Pare', 'Ganashatru' and 'Shakha Prashakha'.
The Padama Bhushan awardee has also worked with other famous directors such as Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose and Rituparno Ghosh. Besides films, Chatterjee is also known for his passion for the stage where he has both acted and directed plays. He is also one of the all-time best elocutionists of Bengal. He has also received 'The Officier des Arts et Metiers', the highest award for arts from France and lifetime achievement award from Italy.

Akshay Kumar teams up with 'Ghajini' director

Mumbai: At a time when most actors are limiting themselves to a film or two annually, Akshay Kumar has half a dozen films lined up till the next year. Akki's next 12 months are marked by jam-packed schedules for not only his shoots but also promotional activities.
Akshay, who's currently shooting for Neeraj Pandey's jewellery heist film in Mumbai suburbs, has recently finalised the dates for A Murugadoss's second Hindi venture after Ghajini. Interestingly, the South director is presently wrapping up the Vijay-Kajal Agarwal Tamil film, which he's remaking with Akshay later this October, and completing by next February.

It is learnt that Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan had evinced an interest in the Hindi remake of the director's Tamil movie. "However, Murugadoss is making another film with Shah Rukh. Besides, he's insistent that he'll remake this film in Hindi only with Akshay and no one else," says our source, adding that in all probability, Katrina Kaif will be signed on for the action romance that features Kumar in the role of an encounter specialist.
"Akshay and Katrina make a good pair and have delivered a good number of hits. And Tees Maar Khan registered very good collections in the opening three days," points our source. Talking of the actor's packed date diary, he'll start shooting for his co-production with Himesh Reshammiya and Sunil Lulla in April-May, after wrapping up Neeraj Pandey's heist thriller.
"Besides, in the coming weeks, Akshay will also be promoting his upcoming comedy helmed by Sajid Khan. And while he's shooting for the co-production with Himesh, he's also committed to start Milan Luthria's sequel to his gangster film for Ekta Kapoor in June, after the release of the Prabhudeva-directed action romance," reveals the actor's friend.
A small break in between
If that's not all, Kumar is also flying off abroad for a month, timed with his son's school vacation. "Aarav's holidays are in July. So Akshay's going abroad with his family for a month. And in that time, he prefers to be disconnected from all things professional. And after his return, he'll wrap up Milan's gangster film, before staring Murugadoss's second Hindi film in October," sums up our informer. Of course, the actor will also be promoting his co-production with Himesh, which is scheduled to release this Diwali.
