Hundreds flock to meet '50 Shades of Grey' author

Miami: Young school teachers, middle-aged nurses and even the elderly flocked to a Miami book store Sunday for a chance to meet the author of the bestselling erotic romance 'Fifty Shades of Grey' in the launch of her US book tour.
British newcomer E L James drew more than 500 men and women at a morning book signing and spoke that evening to a boisterous, uninhibited crowd at the historic Biltmore Hotel. It was her second-ever book signing, yet the size of the crowd snaking through the store with mimosas and books in hand drew comparisons to the past response for writers such as Anne Rice and even politicians.
"This is a literary phenomenon," said Mitchell Kaplan, owner of Books & Books, the independent bookstore where James was signing copies. "E L struck a nerve, and her storytelling speaks to so many people."

In a few short months, James has snagged a seven-figure contract with Vintage Books, and Universal Pictures and Focus Films have purchased the rights to all three books in the trilogy about an unworldly college student who begins an unusual romantic relationship with a wealthy young businessman. The books have been called "mommy porn" for their sexual content and large, mostly female following, though men are signing up for autographs as well.
"I read it through lunch breaks and I'm giggling," said Laura Vargas, 31, an executive assistant at a large insurance company. "I'm like, 'I can't believe she just wrote that.'"

'Breakout Nations' a brilliant analysis of new markets

These days, our shores are awash with books on emerging economies. At least one new book hits the stands every month. These are mostly written by Americans. Of late, some Indians who have made it big in the United States have also jumped into the book-writing business. Morgan Stanley's top executive Ruchir Sharma's book 'Breakout Nations' stands out in this clutter of books. It is one of the most fascinating books on the world's new economies.
Like most authors writing on new markets, Ruchir Sharma gives importance to China and India, dubbed as the twin engines of future growth. He gives a country-by-country account, and knows how to tell his story lucidly. He avoids dry statistics and economic theories and gives an interesting personal account.
Sharma does not give sermons from a distant America or Davos. He spends one week every month in an emerging market to gain first hand, grassroots experience.
'Breakout Nations' a brilliant analysis of new markets
The book starts out with a trip to China. Sharma analyses China's growth story, which some call a miracle. He is not overawed by that country's sudden emergence as an economic leader. He is fair both in praise and criticism of the methods adopted by China to achieve its goal.
Sharma's analysis of the Indian market is fascinating. His Indian background gives him insights that a Western writer would never be able to glean. Even though he appreciates our urge to emerge stronger, he warns that we should not take our growth story for granted. India has just a 50 per cent chance of becoming a breakout nation (exceeding expectations of 7 per cent GDP growth) in the coming years, he says. His India-China comparison looks objective.

CBSE commits faux pas, calls PoK 'Azad Jammu and Kashmir' in map

New Delhi: In a major faux pas, a new CBSE textbook for class three in an Army school in Srinagar depicts the map of Jammu and Kashmir exactly how Pakistan claims it to be.
The map reportedly calls the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir region, 'Azad Jammu and Kashmir', a term used by Pakistan to describe the region.
The Gilgit-Baltistan region, which is a part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, is called the Northern areas.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has said that the HRD Ministry must get to the bottom of the matter.
"The HRD Ministry must look into the matter immediately. They must find out if this was a mistake or done deliberately," he said.
"This is a serious matter because Jammu and Kashmir is a controversial topic. If wrong information about the country's boundaries is being taught to young children, then it must be stopped at once because it is goes against the good of the country."
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rashid Alvi said action would be taken against those responsible.
"We do not have information on the issue. If such a thing has been done, action will be taken," he said.
Reportedly, some Army commanders have now asked some of the school principals to get back to them with the books so that they can take a look. In the meantime, the Army has decided to write to the CBSE and the HRD Ministry regarding the issue.
The Army has been maintaining that its position vis-a-vis the issue is very clear since the Army is not a publishing authority. Also, the book was published by a leading publishing house based in Karol Bagh in Delhi, which means that, probably, the HRD Ministry is going to sit up and take notice.

Universities failing on 'employability', students say

"My tutors were brilliant and without my course I wouldn't have the job I have, but there was no mention of careers," says Bee Pahnke, 21, who graduated last summer with a degree in creative writing from the University of Greenwich.
"In the third year we had a talk, but it all seemed to be 'if you want to do a master's and how to get published'. And I just thought, 'yes, I may do a master's and I may eventually publish a novel, but in the meantime I need and want a job.'"
Pahnke, now working as a junior writer at a business language consultancy, says that with creative jobs, there seems to be an assumption that "you have to be the luckiest person ever to land one of them. But there are jobs out there – it's a careers adviser's job to know what they are."

School music under threat

It's a weekday morning in Tower Hamlets and the Brady Arts and Community Centre is ringing with the sounds of the Doctor Who theme tune, performed by an orchestra of primary school musicians, some as young as six.
Nearly all primary-aged children in the area are entitled to a year's free instrumental lessons, funded by Tower Hamlets Arts and MusicEducation Service (Thames). Those who show promise, like the members of this orchestra, get a second year's free lessons. "The idea is to give all children, regardless of their background or family income, the opportunity to learn an instrument," says Karen Brock, who heads the service.
Thames is one of 165 music services in England and Wales that provide instrumental tuition and classroom music support in schools, as well as running out-of-hours activities such as orchestras, bands and music clubs.

School quota: No extra burden on parents, says Kapil Sibal

New Delhi: Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal says he hopes the burden of 25 per cent school quota for the poor will not be passed onto other parents. He assures that the government and schools will work out a way to fund the additional expenditure.
Speaking to Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate, he said that the schools would find ways not to pass the monetary burden on parents of the more affluent students.
"We made some calculations on this and under the act if the school has taken no benefit from the government at all and this will vary from state to state the government contribution annually will vary from 6000 to 19000. we made a calculation," he said.
But when asked whether the amount would be sufficient to cover the cost school charges, he said, "It may not be sufficient. Now in the 12th plan what we are trying to do is that even for disadvantaged children in private schools we want the government to subsidise their uniform and their textbook. That's a proposal in the 12th plan. I hope it passes through," he said.
But he also said that it may not happen for five years.
"The other thing we want the school management to do is that if they have their surpluses and if they have their reserves may be part of that can be spent here. If not that then you have many corporates committed to corporate social responsibility with 2 per cent of their entire turnover for corporate social responsibility. Schools can actually tap their resources so that there is no burden on parents," Sibal said.

Give your EWS lists, govt tells public schools

ParentsNew Delhi: On the day when the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of the Right To Education Act, 2009, the Delhi government sent letters to all public schools in the city, seeking figures regarding admissions of students from the economically weaker section (EWS) and disadvantaged groups, for the academic year 2012-13.
According to sources, the letters were sent to the schools to collate data regarding the seats that “may still be vacant” in the EWS category. Once the data is collated, the vacant seats will be notified by the Directorate of Education, to be filled by the government. However, schools believe that the data is likely to be used for payments to the schools “toward reimbursements.”
Principal of Ahlcon Public School, Ashok Pandey said, “We send the data to the Department of Education (DoE) every year but no payments have been made for the years 2011 and 2012.” He said a small amount...

Another Pakistani author, Musharraf Ali Farooqi, strikes the 'write' chord

Islamabad: While the world continues to raise a toast to contemporary Pakistani authors, the latest author to enter the literary marathon is a genius of sorts who translates Urdu tomes and works on his own tales of fiction with equal ease.
Musharraf Ali Farooqi caught everyone's attention with translations of Urdu classics "The Adventures of Amir Hamza" and the first book of a projected 24-volume magical fantasy epic, "Hoshruba".
His first novel, "The Story of a Widow", was shortlisted for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2010 and his children's books "The Cobbler's Holiday Or Why Ants Don't Wear Shoes" and "The Amazing Moustaches of Mocchhander the Iron Man and Other Stories" too were received well.
Another Pakistani author, Musharraf Ali Farooqi, strikes the 'write' chord
What sets Farooqi apart from other writers is that he is not guilty of portraying Pakistan as a violence-ridden country, a portrayal most publishers love and most writers thrive on.
Farooqi's latest work, "Between Clay and Dust" the story of wrestler Ustad Ramzi and courtesan Gohar Jan, which releases this week is no exception.
"'Between Clay and Dust' is a story of two artists who are approaching the end of their careers in courtly arts and must come to terms with the meaning of their lives as their worlds disintegrate in the wake of India's Partition," Farooqi said.
