EPL: Torres hat-trick leads Chelsea 6-1 rout vs QPR

London: Fernando Torres scored his first hat-trick in more than 2½ years on Sunday to lead Chelsea to a 6-1 Premier League win over Queens Park Rangers.
In their first match since reaching the Champions League final, the Blues hit four goals in the opening 25 minutes at Stamford Bridge to humiliate their local rivals, keep up with their rivals in the race for fourth spot, and give their fans yet more reason to celebrate.
Daniel Sturridge scored after 49 seconds, John Terry headed in a corner and the rejuvenated Torres scored twice to put the result beyond doubt with more than an hour remaining.

Torres struck again in the 64th for his first hat-trick since September 2009, when he scored three times in Liverpool's 6-1 win over Hull, and substitute Florent Malouda scored in the 80th.
Djibril Cisse got a late goal back for relegation-threatened QPR.
After just eight goals in his first 61 games since joining Chelsea for 50 million Pounds, Torres now has four from his last two matches.

La Liga: Barcelona bounce back with 7-0 thrashing of Rayo

Barcelona: Barcelona ensured that they suffered no hangover from their week from hell with a resounding 7-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas on Sunday.
It has been a harrowing eight days for the Catalans, who saw their Primera Division and Champions League hopes eliminated by Real Madrid and Chelsea, not to mention the announcement of coach Pep Guardiola's departure at the end of the season.
However, they responded in some style against the outmatched side from the capital, with two goals each from Lionel Messi and Pedro alongside strikes from Seydou Keita and Thiago Alcantara and an own goal by Roberto Correa reducing the gap to Madrid at the top of the league back to seven points.

The title may still be out of reach with only three games left to play, after Spanish leadersReal Madrid closed in on their first league title in four years by strolling to a 3-0 victory over Sevilla earlier in the day, but Barca at least delayed the celebrations of their old foes to Wednesday with a smashing victory that saw them cross the 100-goal tally in the league, while Messi's 43rd league goal drew him level with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Pichichi race.

La Liga: Madrid ease past Sevilla to edge closer to title

Madrid: Karim Benzema scored two second-half goals as Spanish leaders Real Madrid closed in on their first league title in four years by strolling to a 3-0 victory over Sevilla on Sunday.
The France striker struck twice in quick succession early in the second half as Madrid bounced back from their Champions League semi-final exit to Bayern Munich.
Barcelona prevented their arch rivals from seizing the trophy for at least another round, though, with a 7-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano later on Sunday keeping their slim chances of a fourth straight league trophy alive. It was Barcelona's first game since coach Pep Guardiola announced he was leaving at the end of the season, with assistant Tito Vilanova his replacement.

Cristiano Ronaldo extended his league record goal total to 43 with a first-half opener that was the Portugal forward's 57th goal of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
Madrid showed no side effects from Wednesday's disappointing European loss when Ronaldo and Kaka both failed to convert penalties in Madrid's bid for a first Champions League final appearance in 10 years, and faced few scares from an inconsistent Sevilla.
"This is good for us, it was a very important game for us as we continue on looking to be champions," Benzema told Canal Plus TV. "The Champions League is in the past, we only care about the league now."

EPL: West Brom grab a late win against Liverpool

Liverpool: Roy Hodgson marked his return to Anfield with a victory as West Brom grabbed a late 1-0 win against Liverpool on Sunday.
It was a sense of deja vu for Liverpool as a wealth of opportunities in both halves were spurned, while an individual defensive error proved costly as Kenny Dalglish's men yet again failed to find their ruthless touch at home.
Peter Odemwingie's strike proved to be the decider in a rare attack from West Brom who were camped in their own half for the majority of the fixture which invited pressure from Liverpool. Glen Johnson was the culprit of lackadaisical defending as the full-back squandered possession near his own box, which allowed the Nigeria international to eventually race clear and steer the ball past Pepe Reina.

Defeat for Liverpool means Dalglish's men have secured just five wins in the Premier League at Anfield this term and while the Scot will be tempted to venture into the transfer this summer in search of a predatory striker, the club will require a complete overhaul of their home form to make a substantial challenge for a Champions League place next season.
Liverpool had their first chance to take the lead after 10 minutes as Luis Suarez picked out an unmarked Dirk Kuyt inside the West Brom box, but the Dutchman screwed his shot across Ben Foster and past the West Brom goal.

Messi, Ronaldo set La Liga scoring record of 41 goals

Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have both broken the record for league goals in a Primera Division season on the very same night.
Ronaldo headed a crucial second for Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho's men came from behind to beat Sporting Gijon 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Messi hit a double in Barcelona's match at Levante later on Saturday.
Ronaldo had equalled last season's total of 40 with a hat-trick in the 4-1 derby win at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, but surpassed the mark on Saturday after scoring with a 73rd-minute header at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese won the Pichichi prize last season, although Marca, who award the trophy, claimed the Madrid forward had scored 41 times, attributing a deflected free kick against Real Sociedad to Ronaldo - even though the referee had given the goal to Pepe.
Messi, meanwhile, began the day on 39 league goals but his two second-half goals saw Barca come from behind at Levante and he, too, now has 41 Primera Division strikes this term. The Argentine also equalled a Liga record by scoring for the 10th game in a row.
Messi now has 64 goals in all competitions, while Ronaldo has scored 53. Madrid also levelled their all-time Liga goals record of 107 strikes and will look to surpass that total, set by John Toshack's Real side in 1989-90, in next weekend's Clasico at Camp Nou.

Ibrahimovic left disgusted by Barca homecoming

Barcelona: Zlatan Ibrahimovic's return to Barcelona ended with him feeling "disgusted" after two penalties led to AC Milan's 3-1 loss and exit from the Champions League on Tuesday.
Ibrahimovic was back at the Camp Nou for the first time since his 2010 exit from the Spanish champions after just one season and while the Sweden striker set up the Italian club's lone goal from Antonio Nocerino, he was kept from scoring. But Ibrahimovic echoed former Inter Milan and current Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho in feeling that Barcelona's European success has been helped by match officials following a disputed penalty decision.
"I'm just disgusted," the Sweden striker said. "They are the best team in the world but at 1-1 and, playing with intelligence, you can do something. (But) I understand better why Mourinho gets upset every time he plays here - in my opinion it was not fair."

Mourinho was handed a ban last season after going on a long-winded rant following a loss to Barcelona, when he accused UEFA of aiding the Catalan club to their title in 2009 and in subsequent games.
The Italian champions' players were left aggrieved after Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers booked Alessandro Nesta in the 40th minute for yanking down Sergio Busquets inside the area as the pair tussled during a corner kick. It was the kind of shirt pulling that often goes unpunished in top games, and started well before the corner had been taken. Lionel Messi stepped up to score his second penalty to put the hosts back in front before Andres Iniesta's second-half goal sealed the win.

Champions League: Barcelona are already in the final: Mourinho

Madrid: Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho believes Barcelona are guaranteed a place in this season's Champions League final, alluding to favouritism towards the Catalan club in Europe's premier club competition.
The Madrid boss, speaking after his side's 5-2 win over APOEL at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, claimed a meeting with his former side Chelsea at Munich in May is impossible.
When asked about the two semi-finals in a television interview in the tunnel straight after the final whistle, Mourinho told TeleMadrid: "For me the big question is knowing who will play against Barca in the final. It will be a great semi-final, Bayern against Real Madrid, and the best team will go on to play against Barca."

Mourinho then walked away from his interviewer, who quickly followed up by asking the Portuguese why he was so certain that Barcelona would be in the final. "Because they are very good." the Blancos boss added, before abruptly ending the interview.

Champions League: Chelsea have unfinished business with Barcelona, says Lampard

London: Frank Lampard believes Chelsea can claim victory against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final after reaching the last-four by defeating Benfica 2-1 on aggregate in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
The Blues took a 1-0 lead into the quarter-final second leg against the Portuguese side and survived a late scare when Javi Garcia's equaliser put his side within a goal of progressing.
Chelsea are 12/1 to beat Barcelona 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge. But after Raul Meireles smashed home in injury time to secure a 2-1 win on the night, Lampard admitted his mind had already turned to avenging their controversial semi-final defeat to Barcelona in 2009.

"Everyone's got unfinished business with them," the 33-year-old told Sky Sports. "You have to respect they're the greatest team in the world; they have been and still are at the present time. [But] that game is still in our minds, but this is a completely different year so we need to try and beat them."

Bilbao lead Spanish trio in Europa League

London: Athletic Bilbao are best-placed of the three Spanish clubs aiming to reach the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday and still the one that seem to be pressing hardest for victory.
While Atletico Madrid will defend a narrow 2-1 lead at Hannover and Valencia need to overturn a 2-1 deficit when they host AZ Alkmaar, Bilbao have targeted another win over visiting Schalke despite already holding a 4-2 advantage from last week's quarter-final first-leg matches.
Bilbao, who eliminated Manchester United in the previous round, have won plaudits across Europe for their attacking play and don't look likely to change their gameplan. "We can't go out and play stupidly," winger Markel Susaeta said. "Even though we won 4-2, nothing but winning this game has crossed our minds."

Susaeta, the only player in Spain's top-flight to play 50 games already this season, said Bilbao would be on guard against the attacking threat of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Jefferson Farfan and former Spain great Raul Gonzalez, who scored both Schalke's goals last week. The match marks Raul's second playing appearance in Spain since leaving Real Madrid in 2010. Raul played at Valencia last season and has enjoyed facing Spanish competition, with three goals in three matches.

EPL: Manchester United beat Blackburn to extend lead over City

Blackburn: Manchester United moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League after beating Blackburn Rovers 2-0 with dramatic late goals from Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.
The Old Trafford club dominated for long periods of the game, but had to wait until the last 10 minutes to score as Valencia hit a ferocious effort into the far corner from the wing, while Young hit another good effort on the spin with five minutes remaining.
Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes to the side who beat Fulham 1-0 last Monday, with Hernandez, Paul Scholes and Phil Jones replacing Ryan Giggs, Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young.

Steve Kean, meanwhile, only made one alteration to the team who lost to Bolton last weekend, with Mauro Formica dropping to the bench and Bradley Orr coming in to replace him.
United started much the brighter side, with Hernandez coming close on a few occasions in the opening 15 minutes.

Man Utd fans print EPL champions t-shirts

Manchester: A Manchester United fans' website has already started selling a new line of Premier League champions t-shirts despite eight games remaining on the club's top flight calendar this season. The website, United Tees, has created a t-shirt labelled with the slogan Champ20ns in reference to what could be the club's 20th league title.
It also features a message aimed at title rivals Manchester City, which reads: "Money only gets you so far".
The t-shirt's description claims that by selling it, the site are pledging their belief that United will secure the historic Premier League crown this season.

It reads: "It may be squeaky bum time... The managers may be busy playing mind-games... There might be eight league games left... but we think we’ve already done enough: we're three points clear, and there will only be one winner now – United!
"We believe. But do you? And if you do, do you have the guts to put your money where your mouth is by buying our commemorative t-shirt NOW?!
"We want as many United fans as possible to pledge their belief that this will be a record-breaking 20th League title."
United lead City by three points at the top of the table but face a trip to the Etihad Stadium at the end of April where Roberto Mancini's team have won all 15 of their Premier League matches at home this season.

Barcelona complain to UEFA about Milan pitch

Barcelona: Barcelona have filed a complaint to UEFA about the state of the San Siro pitch after their 0-0 draw with AC Milan in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. The defending champions filed the complaint late on Wednesday after the match in which their players lost their footing and kicked up clumps of turf from the ground.
After Wednesday's match, coach Pep Guardiola complained about the pitch, saying that "we adapt to everything, we come and we play. But it is difficult when the pitch is in this state". However, he simultaneously refused to blame the dreadful San Siro pitch and controversial refereeing for their failure to score. "If UEFA wants teams to put on a spectacle, they have to overcome problems like this," Guardiola said. "I don't think it's [AC] Milan or Inter Milan's problem, I think the problem is with the stadium."
Barcelona players felt that they should have had a penalty early in the match when forward Alexis Sanchez appeared to be tripped by Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati. Their players also struggled to keep their footing on a San Siro pitch where huge divots were frequently thrown up. Lionel Messi slipped when taking a free kick in a dangerous position early in the first half, slicing his shot for the ball to bounce out for a goal kick.

"To win the Champions League, you have to overcome a lot of things, that's what makes some sportsmen better than others. Things happen and you have to overcome them. We have won a lot in the last four years, but we have also drawn and lost matches. After a draw or defeat, we have never complained about a refereeing decision or the pitch, maybe we have done so after winning but not after a draw or defeat."
The second leg will be held next Tuesday at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium. And despite playing at home and managing only 38 per cent of possession, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was delighted with Wednesday's 0-0 draw and, above all, the commitment of his side, and is confident his side can sneak an away goal next week.
"I've always said that I'm lucky enough to train a great group of professionals and even the players who aren't on the pitch, even the ones who watch from the stands, they're always ready when they're called upon," he said.

EPL: Ferguson hits back at Vieira over favouritism claims

Manchester: Alex Ferguson has dismissed suggestions made by Manchester City club executive Patrick Vieira that big clubs such as Manchester United get preferential treatment from referees at home. In an interview to the BBC, he said: "When United play at home, they get some advantage that other teams don't get. I think when you go to United, [Real] Madrid, Barcelona or [AC] Milan, when the referees referee these kind of games, it's always difficult to go against these kind of teams. This is the way it is."
Vieira later claimed his views had been misrepresented and taken out of context, but Ferguson insisted regardless that refereeing decisions even themselves out over the course of a season. The United manager also pointed out that Manchester City themselves had benefited from questionable refereeing on several occasions this season.
"Every club gets breaks here and there - you get good ones and bad ones," he told reporters. "It evens itself out over the season, that will never change. We had a terrible decision earlier this season when Newcastle got a penalty and Tottenham could claim the same when Mario Balotelli wasn't sent off and ended up scoring the winning goal. You could go through millions of things like that."

Blackburn Rovers are up next for Manchester United, who will look to keep themselves ahead of City in the title race when they play at Ewood Park in the Premier League on Monday night.
"Maybe smaller clubs feel that [decisions go against them when they play against big clubs] but someone said some years ago that we get lots of penalties. It is only averaging out at three a year. You can't say that is a lot when you are attacking teams all the time. Most managers believe the breaks even themselves out."
Vieira, who enjoyed many title battles against United while at Arsenal, was speaking two days after Fulham had a strong penalty claim turned down near the end of their 1-0 defeat by the champions at Old Trafford last Monday. Victory allowed United to go three points clear of City, with whom Vieira is now a football development executive.
Ferguson also expressed sympathy for referee Michael Oliver, who turned down a strong late appeal for a Fulham penalty when Danny Murphy appeared to be tripped by Michael Carrick in the United box.
"From the referee's position, I can see why he didn't give a penalty when Danny Murphy was brought down," he said. "The ball moved to the angle as Michael Carrick challenged him. From that position, it wasn't clear. It was a good claim but City could have had a penalty against them at Stoke [during the 1-1 draw on Saturday] for a foul by Gareth Barry."

Champions League: Bayern pip Marseille 2-0

Marseille: Bayern Munich had little trouble dispatching a feeble Marseille team 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday, with Mario Gomez grabbing his 11th goal of the competition and Arjen Robben also scoring.
Gomez put Bayern ahead just before half-time, with Marseille goalkeeper Elinton Andrade to blame for letting the ball slip under his body, and Robben added a clinical second in the 69th after a quick one-two with Thomas Mueller.
"We fulfilled our objective, which was to win here without conceding a goal," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said, who was careful to play down the talk of what is now looking likely to be a semi-final against Real Madrid.

"We have a return leg yet to play, so I don't want to talk about the semi-final and who we will be playing. I don't really have any doubts, but I have respect for Marseille."
Out of form, hampered by injuries and suspensions and jeered by their own fans in a stadium barely half full, Marseille hardly tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer at Stade Velodrome as they slipped to their eighth defeat in the last nine games.
"There's still a chance we can go through, but it's a tiny one," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. "We're not in the best position and we know Bayern are very strong at home. Players of that quality always punish you."
Andrade, Marseille's third-choice goalkeeper, replaced the suspended Steve Mandanda and looked nervous, spilling an easy catch and hacking a routine clearance away for a corner instead of down the field early on.
When Gomez struck from the edge of the area, the ball came straight at Andrade, yet he let it roll under his arm and into the bottom right corner. Andrade was playing only his ninth game in three years, and it will be one to forget.
"I have nothing to reproach him for tonight," Deschamps said, defending his choice to pick Andrade.
Gomez, who has 23 goals in the league, is just one behind Barcelona star Lionel Messi in the Champions League scoring charts.
Marseille's fans were in unforgiving mood and refused to encourage the players at the start of the game, even holding up one banner, which said: "Ce soir on est comme vous: on ne sert a rien" (Tonight we're just like you: good for nothing). Other banners, bearing the names of supporters groups, were held upside down in protest.
"It's a difficult situation, as everyone knows," Deschamps said. "I can understand their disappointment."
Marseille fans did not spare Bayern winger Franck Ribery, either.
He had hoped for a warm welcome from the fans who worshipped him when he played for Marseille from 2005-07, but his name was jeered as soon as the stadium announcer read it out and then every time he touched the ball.
Marseille had their only clear-cut chance early on when Neuer palmed away Andre Ayew's header and striker Loic Remy, shaking off a thigh injury to start up front, smashed the rebound into the side netting.
Marseille tried their hardest to drag the German side into a physical battle, closing down space well and stopping Bayern from developing any sort of fluency as the midfield battle became heated.
"What I'm not happy about is the five yellow cards we picked up tonight," Heynckes said.
Ayew broke free down the left and shot into the side netting in the 28th, although it was difficult to beat Neuer from a tight angle.
After a brief spell on top, Marseille fizzled out and Bayern took the lead in the 44th minute after a Marseille move broke down.
Winger Mathieu Valbuena lost the ball to right-back Philip Lahm, who passed it to Ribery, who in turn fed Robben down the right. The Dutchman played in Gomez, who took his chance with a drive that squirmed under Andrade — while his team-mates continued to complain that the ball had hit Lahm's hand in the build-up to the goal.
"Conceding that goal just before half-time really hurt us," Valbuena said. "But when you attack, you leave gaps, and Bayern are very quick up front."
Robben made the game safe after swapping passes with Mueller on the edge of the penalty area and curling the ball past Andrade.
"We put our heart and soul into it, but they were superior to us," Deschamps said.
Ribery turned to applaud the Bayern fans after he came off late in the game to a chorus of whistles from the Marseille fans.
"Franck was very motivated before the game; I thought he did well," Heynckes said. "People have short memories."
Robben blazed over late on, with Gomez better placed. But with one foot in the semi-finals, it was hardly the moment for Gomez to complain.

Champions League: AC Milan hold Barcelona to 0-0 draw

Milan: AC Milan held Barcelona to an entertaining 0-0 draw on Wednesday in the opening leg of the quarterfinals, the first time in 30 matches and more than two years that the Spanish team had been held scoreless in the Champions League.
The last time Barcelona failed to score in the Champions League was in the 0-0 draw with Rubin Kazan in November 2009.
"There's a first time for everything," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "Milan are happy with the result and that's a real compliment for us. Not scoring away from home does penalize us a bit, as I think we will have to score twice to go through.
Champions League: AC Milan hold Barcelona to 0-0 draw

"They are strong in so many aspects, I don't think one goal will be enough. But the pitch will be better than this one, so there'll be a bit more speed. We're used to playing to win."
Barcelona players complained about the state of the pitch, with lumps of turf flying up with every tackle and players slipping constantly.
"It's a shame the pitch isn't suited to a game of football, Inter and Milan deserve a better pitch," Guardiola said. "In the past few years we've won a lot, we've also lost and drawn. But whatever the result we've never been a team to complain about the referee or anything. To be the best you need to overcome these difficulties."
Milan will find out in the return leg at the Camp Nou next Tuesday how much it will regret Robinho's woeful miss early on, while Barcelona should've had a first-half penalty when Alexis Sanchez was brought down by goalkeeper Christian Abbiati.
Lionel Messi, who has scored 55 times this season, had a goal rightly ruled out for offside at the San Siro. This is only the second time a match between these two European heavyweights has ended scoreless in 14 meetings.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who spent an unhappy season at Barcelona, was also kept quiet although he should have done better with two opportunities.
"I'm happy," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "The lads put on a good performance, they interpreted the game as they should have done, attacked strongly and defended well when they had to. It's a good result to go to Barcelona with. It will be a difficult game but two out of three results will favor us.
"Next week I want a game like that of four-five months ago when, especially in the first half, we had several brilliant chances which we then wasted. So I want to have the same chances next week."
These teams also played each other in the group stage, with defending champion Barcelona beating Milan 3-2 in November in their last matchup. And the opening stages of this game appeared to promise a similar amount of goals.
Madrid forward Robinho should have scored in the third minute. Milan attacker Kevin Prince Boateng's shot crashed off defender Gerard Pique and the rebound was headed on by Ibrahimovic to an unmarked Robinho just outside the six-yard box, however the Brazilian shot over the crossbar.
Milan were almost made to rue that missed opportunity immediately, Messi drilling the ball low across the face of goal.
Barcelona went close when Abbiati spilled Messi's shot but Antonio Nocerino managed to clear off the line with Dani Alves sliding to try and tap it into the net in the ninth minute.
The Spanish side should have had a penalty after a well-worked free kick came to Sanchez, who beat the offside trap, rode a tackle from behind and was then brought down by Abbiati as he rounded the goalkeeper.
Ibrahimovic had his first sight of goal in the 20th minute, shooting straight at goalkeeper Victor Valdes. But Barca were starting to get into their stride to dominate possession as Milan struggled to carve out opportunities.
A lovely Barca move followed by a one-two between Xavi and Messi finished with the midfielder's shot being parried by Abbiati.
Milan were leaving themselves dangerously exposed at times at the back, and were almost caught out when Sanchez raced half the length of the pitch with Luca Antonini in pursuit. The Milan defender managed to get in a last-ditch tackle in the middle of the box as the striker was about to shoot.
Ibrahimovic could have put Milan ahead when he was picked out in a dangerous position by Massimo Ambrosini in the 57th, but the Sweden striker failed to control the ball and Barca cleared the danger.
As the match lost some of its frenetic pace, Barcelona defender Carles Puyol went close with a glancing header from a corner that only just went the wrong side of the post.
Barcelona could have won the match three minutes from time but Abbiati brilliantly stopped Messi's fierce effort, before Antonini cleaned up the rebound to clear the danger.
Messi felt aggrieved not to have been granted a penalty when he was muscled off the ball and brought down by two Milan defenders, but the initial contact looked to have been outside the box.
