IPL 5: KOL vs DEL - 2nd Match, Kolkata

21:09: "Plenty of water on the ground. Start time depends on the outfield, so we hope the match can start. 50% of the ground is still covered so we'll inspect after that. Minimum overs is 5 overs and the cut off time is 23:20. The ground-staff have done a pretty good job. The positive point is that they have removed the cover from the pitch and it looks ok" say the umpires.
20:30: Rain has stopped. The super-soppers are doing their work. The drainage at the Eden Gardens is very good so we will almost surely have a match today. Play can start as late as 23:20 and the teams will play a 5-over a side game if that happens.
20:00 Err.. not good news this time. It is raining, and the covers are still on. The wait continues. We hear that the next update will be in half an hour.

IPL 5 Live Updates: KKR vs DD toss delayed

Mumbai: Actress Preity Zinta, who has been away from the limelight for quite a few years, is nervous about her forthcoming performance at the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 5 in Pune. "It's been 3 and a half years since I last performed on stage. Suddenly the butterflies have doubled," she further tweeted. Preity co-owns Indian Premier League's Mohali-based team Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). Is Samsung Galaxy Note the shape of things to come?

Hong Kong: It's been likened to a piece of toast, a device for elephants and a throwback to the 1980s-style brick phone.
And yet, despite all the sniggering, Samsung Electronics has sold 5 million of the phone/tablet Galaxy Note, helping drive its booming handset profits in the quarter just ended.
More than a freak hit, consumer and design experts believe the surprise success of the "phablet" marks a deeper shift in the fast-paced world of mobile devices.
Is Samsung Galaxy Note the shape of things to come?
The most obvious thing about the Note is its size. Its 5.3 inch screen is almost as wide as the iPhone's screen is long. And then there's the stylus.
Where Apple's co-founder, the late Steve Jobs famously ridiculed the idea of using a pen to interact with a screen, Samsung has partnered with Japan's Wacom Co Ltd, a market leader in digital pen technology, to come up with something less clunky. As part of Samsung's marketing blitz it has set up artists in malls to draw portraits of passers-by.

Friday Release: Relive the magic in 'Titanic 3D'

Los Angeles: There was a time when James Cameron's career looked as though it might join the Titanic, down in the depths. Before he became king of the modern blockbuster with 'Titanic' and 'Avatar,' Cameron teetered on an abyss as his romance set aboard the doomed ocean liner ran into production delays, cost overruns and smug talk in Hollywood that the director was out of control with his $200 million shipwreck.
Fifteen years, 11 Academy Awards and $1.84 billion at the worldwide box office later, Cameron is relaunching 'Titanic' in a 3-D version whose new earnings will close the gap on the film that eventually surpassed it as contemporary Hollywood's top-grossing flick. That would be Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar," with $2.8 billion.
Cameron had thought about a 3-D 'Titanic' for the past decade and eventually settled on April's centennial of the 1912 shipwreck as the ideal time. It opens April 4, in advance of the April 14 anniversary.

Fresh from his record-setting seven-mile (11-kilometer) solo ocean dive in the Marianas Trench, done while on break from writing his two 'Avatar' sequels, Cameron continues to ride a wave of success no one foresaw amid the gloomy predictions of 1997, when 'Titanic' was bumped from summer to Christmas release because of production problems.

Damon Hill calls for re-think on Bahrain Grand Prix

Former world champion Damon Hill has called on Formula One (F1) bosses to reconsider going ahead with this month's controversial Bahrain Grand Prix and warned that the sport's image could suffer if the race is held. The 1996 champion had previously supported the race after taking part in a fact-finding visit to Bahrain in December last year.
But he told the Guardian on Thursday he now felt a re-think was necessary for the event that was cancelled in 2011 following prolonged civil unrest that some reports claimed more than 40 lives. Hill said: "What we must put above all else is what will be the penalty, in terms of human cost, if the race goes ahead? "It would be a bad state of affairs, bad for F1, to be seen to be enforcing martial law to hold the race."
Hill added that he was worried that the race might create more problems than it solved if it went ahead as scheduled on April 22, a week after the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. Human rights activists and opposition groups in Bahrain, where unrest has continued daily, have called for the race to be cancelled again. Hill explained: "Looking at it today, you'd have to say that it could be creating more problems than it's solving. "The protests have not abated and may even have become more determined and calculated. It is a worrying state of affairs."

Bahrain race organisers held a lunch in London last week at which they argued that holding the grand prix would have an important unifying role in their strife-torn country. And F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said he has no doubts about going ahead, after persuading several teams - including Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Williams - to send senior representatives to the lunch. But Hill said: "The view I gave after returning from the visit last year was based on my understanding of several factors - the substantial economic significance of the GP for Bahrain; that the report on the riots condemned the actions of the police and security forces, and that both sides were to take part in meaningful dialogue to resolve the problems peacefully.

US agencies hid 26/11-style terror plot from UK

London: American spy agencies refused to give British intelligence services full details of a "Mumbai-style" terrorist plot in the country, fearing their top-secret sources may get exposed, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
The CIA had warned the British secret intelligence service, MI6, that Al Qaeda was planning an attack 18 months ago. But it withheld detailed information because of concerns that it would be released by British courts, the Daily Telegraph reported.
British intelligence agencies were subsequently forced to carry out their own investigations, according to Whitehall sources.

Several potential terrorists were identified with links to a wider European plot, but it is still unknown whether the British authorities have uncovered the full extent of the threat.
The breakdown in relations came after the release of US intelligence in the case of Binyam Mohamed, a former Guantánamo Bay detainee who took legal action over his incarceration.
The government was subsequently forced to pay millions in compensation to him and other detainees.

Pranab among top 5 global forces dealing with 'Transfer Pricing'

New Delhi: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has been ranked fifth in the list of top forces that effectively deal with disputes and other issues concerning transfer pricing, prepared by UK-based newsletter TPWeek.
Besides Mukherjee, the other leading forces were Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), ActionAid and Taskforce on Financial Integrity and Economic Development, revealed the poll conducted by TPWeek.
Around 700 readers comprising tax directors, transfer pricing advisers, non-governmental organisations among others chose the five leading forces in global transfer pricing.

Transfer pricing deals with the technique, wherein parent companies sell goods and services to subsidiaries in other countries to minimise tax liability.
"The Indian Minister of Finance was nominated for his power to implement an APA (Advance Pricing Agreement) programme in India. This is a long-awaited development for India tax payers and the new option for certainty will go some way to alleviating taxpayers' dispute in the country and may encourage more foreign direct investment," TPWeek said.

Now Sky News in the dock for email hacking

London: Sky News, a part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire in Britain, on Thursday admitted that it illegally hacked e-mails twice for information, further tarnishing the image of the press baron.
The admission is an indication that unethical news gathering practices were not confined to the now closed News of the World, but were more widespread in Murdoch's media holdings in Britain.
News of the World has since been closed in the wake of the phone-hacking controversy, which sparked off a raft of inquiries against Murdoch's media companies and caused commercial setback to BSkyB, when he was forced to withdraw his takeover bid.
Now Sky News in the dock for email hacking
Sky News, which is a subsidiary of BSkyB, said hacked emails belonging to one John Darwin, who was in the news for faking his own death in a canoe for 500,000 pounds in insurance gains, and his wife Anne.
Due to recent allegations, BSkyB is under investigation by regulator Ofcom to determine whether the broadcaster is 'fit and proper' to continue to hold a broadcasting licence.

Salman Khan in favour of remaking 'Zanjeer'

Mumbai: Although his father, Salim Khan, has strong reservations over a proposed remake of the 70's hit film, 'Zanjeer', Salman Khan is all for remaking this film. 'Zanjeer', a 1973 action film, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Pran, was directed by Prakash Mehra. Now Mehra's son, Amit, has announced that he will produce its remake version.
Scriptwriters of the 1973 superhit film, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar are not exactly enthused over the idea and feel that the storyline of the original movie should be retained.
Javed Akhtar had said that the sanctity of the film should be maintained and the cult status that the film has created should not be overlooked. Salim's son Salman, however, is fully supportive of the remake idea.

Katrina is a stupendous actor: Shah Rukh Khan

Mumbai: Actor Shah Rukh Khan, who will be sharing screen space with Katrina Kaif in their maiden romantic film by Yash Chopra, says that his co-star is a stupendous actor and he even tried to adapt himself to her work approach.
After a gap of eight years, Yash Chopra has returned to direction with with this untitled film, which also stars Anushka Sharma. The shoot has begun in February this year in London.
"I got to shoot with Katrina Kaif for the first time, which was wonderful. I do a couple of films a year and I haven't worked with her. I think she is a stupendous actor. Everyone says about her being hardworking and very talented.
Its more important how we work together.. how we work as a team," said Shahrukh.
Katrina is a stupendous actor: Shah Rukh Khan
The model-turned-actress has been in Bollywood since nine years and all those who have worked with her have always praised her.
"When I work with a lot of young actors, I learn a lot as they have a different way of doing scenes. I have worked now for 21 years, they have been working for 10 years. When Katrina is doing a scene, she has a different way of approaching it.

Director Srijit Mukherjee to act in Anjan Dutta's film 'Dutta vs Dutta'

Kolkata: After two back-to-back successful films, 'Autograph' and 'Baishe Srabon', filmmaker Srijit Mukherjee is all set to face the camera in this year's national award winner Anjan Dutta's film 'Dutta vs Dutta'.
Srijit, 34, who had earlier turned up in Aparna Sen's 'Iti Mrinalini' in a significant role, said he would not speak much about his new assignment.
"Anjan da is my mentor who has helped me evolve into a director. I greatly learnt the craft from him before moving to film direction," said Srijit. Srijit, who was speaking on location at a dingy north Kolkata neighbourhood last week, said his character is the reflection of an intellectual of 1970s as the film sought to recapture the spirit of Kolkata in those era.

"My character basically sustains itself on poem and music of those days and it is a reflection of that phase," he said. Dutta's film 'Ranjana ami ar Asbona' recently bagged three national honours.

Would never release a film during IPL: Shah Rukh

Mumbai: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who co-owns an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, believes that releasing films during the tournament is a risk that he would never take.
"If someone is releasing it (a film), they know what they are doing. But I would actually think twice, especially in the middle of the tournament. In the beginning yes, you can take a chance, but not in the middle and never at the end, I wouldn't release a film," the 46-year-old, who co-owns Kolkata Knight Riders, said here at the unveiling of Nokia brand campaign for IPL 5.
"If you are going to analyze it some people are releasing their films, yes they are taking a chance because the matches happen mostly 8-11 so that show can be affected if it's an important match. I would think about it if I am releasing a film as a producer," he added.
Would never release a film during IPL: Shah Rukh
Shah Rukh says there are filmmakers, who hold back films and decide on releasing them post-IPL.
"People do wait for IPL. Post-IPL has become a period where people assume that there is a want of films and you will release your film as soon as the season gets over. So that tells you that is an important part where people hold back their films," Shah Rukh said.

Shah Rukh Khan is West Bengal's brand ambassador

Kolkata: Gujarat may have the Big B, but Bengal has King Khan. Not to be outdone by Narendra Modi in roping in tourists, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has enlisted the help of Shah Rukh Khan by making him the state's brand ambassador.
State Tourism Minister Rachpal Singh said, "We know Amitabh Bachchan as the Gujarat's brand ambassador but now we have Shah Rukh. He has great acceptability. We can tap into foreign market."
Bengal is a state that boasts both mountains and the sea. Yet tourism had lagged for decades under the Left rule. Shah Rukh, who already owns the Kolkata Knight Rider's franchise, has a special place in the Bengali heart.
But as is typical in Bengal, there are voices of criticism too.
Bengal has had a long lull in tourism. Now with Brand Shah Rukh propping up Brand Bengal, the government certainly hopes to break that jinx and revive an economy that has been on life support for too long.
