Port-of-Spain, Trinidad: Michael Hussey struck an unbeaten 54 on Monday to lead Australia to 267-6 at lunch on the second day of the second Test against West Indies.
West Indies struck an early blow with the second new ball when the visitors resumed on 208-5, but Hussey and James Pattinson shared an unbroken stand of 59 that deflated the hosts. The 36-year-old Hussey, who survived a chance Sunday when on 5, also benefited from a stumping miss when on 47. He hit four fours off 152 balls in 3 hours. Pattinson contributed a level-headed 21 not out, including three fours off 63 deliveries.
Fast bowler Kemar Roach led the hosts with 3-96. Offspinner Shane Shillingford, the unlucky bowler on Hussey's two chances, took 2-70.
The day began brightly for West Indies, with Roach removing wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade for 11 on the second ball of the second over. Wade drove at a good length delivery and edged low for Darren Bravo to hold the catch at second slip.
Roach and Fidel Edwards were unlucky not to claim another breakthrough, with both quicks beating Hussey and Pattinson on several occasions. But the pair of left-handers gradually emerged to share an important stand. Hussey brought up his 50 off 137 balls with a push through extra cover off Darren Sammy's medium pace. Pattinson shrugged off two nasty blows to his right arm from Roach and Edwards to confidently hit three boundaries.
Light rain arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled lunch break and threatened to delay the resumption.
