New Delhi: Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Monday stressed on the need to train law students in international laws, saying it would help India stand in "good stead" and hoped senior judges will prove to be the best guides for the new breed of lawyers.
Addressing a gathering at the release of selected speeches and writings of former Chief Justice of India, Justice PN Bhagwati, he said India has "in a sense" not contributed much to the making of new norms and, "therefore, to the interpretation of laws".
He said if law schools are not educating students in public and private international laws, then "I think we are missing out."
He said senior judges are the best guides for students are most of them are associated with well-known law colleges of the country "and perhaps a little more emphasis on these matters would stand us in good stead."
Law Minister Salman Khurshid recalled how Justice Bhagwati had dismissed a case when he had appeared before him for the first time as a lawyer.
Home Minister P Chidambaram, also present on the occasion, said Justice Bhagwati, while pronouncing judgements, never gave the impression that he was making laws and encroaching upon the territory of the legislature.
