Maharashtra land row: Opposition guns for Vilasrao Deshmukh

Mumbai: The Opposition has come down heavily on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh after a leaked Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report alleged that the Congress leader during his tenure as Maharashtra chief minister made inappropriate land allotments. The CAG report, which is yet to be released, names five senior politicians for alleged irregularities in land allotments.
Leaders from the Left Front and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded strong action against those named in the CAG report.
"This is all serious matter and CBI and other investigation agency should take note of these matters and culprit should be brought to books. No one should go scott free," said Communist Party of India Rajya Sabha MP D Raja.
"After Adarsh scam, this is a Maha Adarsh scam. This government is embroiled in one scam after another. A thorough probe must be ordered into this latest scam and the guilty should be punished," said BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
The report names Deshmkukh along with Maharashtra cabinet ministers Narayan Rane, Chhagan Bhujbal, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Patangrao Kadam as having being involved in allotting land at subsidised rates.
According to the CAG report, accessed by CNN-IBN, former ministers Nitin Raut, Vasant Purke and Ajit Ghorpade also showed low incomes to get homes in the Aashirwad Cooperative Housing Society.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that actions would be taken after the report is tabled in the state Assembly.
"I have just received a copy of the CAG report yesterday. It will be taken to the cabinet and due procedure will be followed after which it will be tabled in the assembly," said Chavan.
